It turns out that one essential amino acid in particular, L-leucine, is more than just a building block for muscle, but also a agent.
What does this mean?
1.8g L-leucine alone (one of the three BCAA’s in Splyce) is enough to elicit maximal muscle protein synthesis in healthy adults. This happens when leucine enters skeletal muscle and activates a growth factor protein called mTOR; however, there are other players in the process that are necessary to keep muscle protein synthesis churning. Specifically, we’re talking about the other two BCAA’s, l-isoleucine and l-valine.
So, adding another 1.8g of the other two should be enough to fix the problem, right? Wrong. Not only is the combination crucial to muscle growth, but the ratio of the three is too, as is shown in most clinical research utilizing BCAA’s in athletes. That ratio appears to be 2:1:1, or half as much isoleucine and valine for every leucine, first because that ratio mimics the BCAA content of animal protein and second because the human body seems to metabolize BCAA’s best in this 2:1:1 ratio.
And it’s not only effective during training.
Recent research shows that even when amino acid levels are elevated in your blood after a meal, muscle protein synthesis grinds to a halt after 2 hours. However, raising BCAA concentrations in the blood with a quick, clinically effective dose of BCAA’s, can reignite muscle protein synthesis, extending your normal physiological response past the 2-hour hurdle.
