Sleep Aids

sleep aids

1. What are sleep aids, where do the main ingredients come from, and what studies give evidence to support this?

Sleep aids are products that are designed to to aid and assist in the enhancement of a quality, restful night of sleep. Sleep aids can come from a variety of different sources and there are many products on the market designed specifically to help you sleep better. Some of the top ingredients you will find in many sleep aids includes:

  • GABA - Increases The Body's Sleeping Cycle

GABA is an extremely powerful amino acid that is specifically classified as neurotransmitter, because it helps nerve impulses cross the synapses and communicate better. Gaba also has many positive effects on the nervous system and the body's sleep cycle.

There have also been many studies done regarding GABA and it's effects on the body's sleep cycle. People found themselves having more vivid dreams and sleeping deeper than before. That effect alone led to increased energy throughout the day. It is definitely no mistake that more and more people are finding themselves turned onto GABA and products containing GABA. There is just no substitute for the energy, and feeling of well-being in your life.

  • MELATONIN - Regulates Body's Sleep Cycle

Melatonin is a neurohormone produced in the brain by the pineal gland, from the amino acid tryptophan. The synthesis and release of melatonin are stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light, suggesting the involvement of melatonin in circadian rhythm and regulation of diverse body functions. Levels of melatonin in the blood are highest prior to bedtime. The release of melatonin correlates with the body's cycle of day and night.

Melatonin has been shown to play an important role in sleeping and much more. What happens is as light inhibits melatonin's production, and darkness stimulates it, melatonin regulates your body's internal clock. Research over the years has shown repeatedly that this hormone helps people sleep more soundly throughout the night without as may awakenings. That effect alone greatly enhances your quality of sleep, and many people will also experience positive mood swings.

Melatonin is also beneficial in helping people that fly overcome jet lag. Jet lag tends to give many people a feeling of being "out of it" or disoriented due to time changes. Melatonin can help you recover quicker from jet lag after extended periods of flight.

  • VALERIAN ROOT - Relaxation And Enhanced Sleep

Valerian root has been used as a sleep aid for over 1,000 years. Valerian root specific properties that help relax the central nervous sytem, promote feelings of calmness, decrease levels of anxiety and stress, and enhance sleep. Additionally, there has been no reported morning grogginess and it is non-addictive.

The effect of an aqueous extract of valerian root on subjectively rated sleep measures was studied on 128 people. Each person received 9 samples to test (3 containing placebo, 3 containing 400 mg valerian extract and 3 containing a proprietary over-the-counter valerian preparation). The samples, identified only by a code number, and presented in random order, were taken on non-consecutive nights.

Valerian produced a significant decrease in subjectively evaluated sleep latency scores and a significant improvement in sleep quality: the latter was most notable among people who considered themselves poor or irregular sleepers, smokers, and people who thought they normally had long sleep latencies. Night awakenings, dream recall and somnolence the next morning were relatively unaffected by valerian.

  • L-TRYPTOPHAN - Increases Brain Levels Of Seratonin And Melatonin

L-tryptophan is one of the eight essential amino acid that is made from plant or animal sources. It has been used to treat sleep problems (insomnia), anxiety, depression, premenstrual syndrome, attention deficit disorder, and for smoking cessation and other conditions.

The way that L-tryptophan helps people sleep better is due to the fact that L-Tryptophan forms 5-HTP, which forms serotonin and melatonin. This is important because serotonin levels effect mood and melatonin affects sleep.

Both of these facts are important because even if your body might be tired, if you are stressed out, then your brain will have a harder time shutting down and allowing you to fall asleep. That is precisely where serotonin works in perfect harmony with melatonin to let you get a deep, relaxing night of sleep.

2. What can sleep aids do for me?

Sleep aids can assist you in getting a better, fuller, and deeper nights sleep with less interruptions throughout the night. They can help you wake up more energized, alert, and ready to take on your day!

Sleep aids can also give you more vivd and realistic dreams because you reach stage 5 in the sleep cycle, which is called REM. What happens when you reach REM is that your beta waves have a high frequency and occur when the brain is quite active, both in REM sleep and while awake.

Additionally the body can experience frequent bursts of rapid eye movement, along with occasional muscular twitches. It is also interesting to note that your heart may beat faster and breathing become shallow and rapid.

Remember that if you have any questions regarding health concerns regarding taking any type of sleep aid, it is always recommended to consult with your physician prior to taking them.

3. Who needs sleep aids and how much should be taken? Are there any side effects or symptoms of deficiency?

Below is a list of things to consider if you are thinking about taking a sleep aid:

  • Having Trouble Falling Asleep
  • Restless Sleep
  • The Desire For A Quicker Recovery Time If You Weight Train
  • More Energy And Mental Focus During The Day
If any of the above items fits you or describes your lifestyle, then a sleep aid is certainly recommended!

When it comes to how much you should take each night, you always want to follow the recommended serving size for whatever product it is you are taking. Taking more than the recommended amount can lead to grogginess in the morning and you might even struggle to wake up!

Reportedly, the slight, uncommon side effects that experts have been concerned with regarding sleep aids are:
  • Possible Depression
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Reduced alertness
  • Vomiting
It is good to keep in mind that these side effects are very rare, but still need to be considered when taking a sleep aid. Again, if you have any questions or concerns regarding any product that you are taking, we recommend you speak to your doctor or physician. Beyond that, sleep aids are there to help you get a fuller, more restful night of sleep and let you wake up the next day full of energy and ready to face your day head-on!
