The FRS (Free Radical Scavenger) formula was created in 1997 after seven years of extensive research into the effects and benefits of plant based antioxidants on human health, by Thomas Lines, a successful entrepreneur and flavonoid antioxidant expert. Mr. Lines' research led him to focus on the extraction of specific plant-based antioxidants such as quercetin and how they work synergistically with other functional ingredients.
The formula was tested and refined by leading scientific researchers from Harvard University, and resulted in the patented FRS Healthy Energy product line. Clinical studies, notably a cycling trial at Pepperdine University- demonstrate the efficacy of FRS and confirm its solid scientific foundation.
The opportunity to introduce the FRS formula beyond academic and scientific circles came to life in 2003, when The FRS Company was officially Formed. The product and its benefits were so compelling to Richard Lamb, co-founder and former president of Balance Bar, that he came out of retirement to build the FRS brand and bring it to the consumer marketplace.
FRS was originally introduced to consumers in late 2004 in concentrate form through an e-commerce system. The cyclists that were part of the initial clinical trials in California became the brand's fist devotees and ignited a cult-like following among high performance professional and amateur athletes, as well as nutrition industry leaders and influencers. Soft chews and drink mix powders were added in 2005 and 2006 in response to athletes' needs for a variety of ways to get their daily dose of healthy energy. Single serve cans quickly followed and distribution expanded beyond its highly successful e-commerce business to west coast bike shops, grocery and health food stores.
