Slow Protein Digestion, Anti Catabolic Miceller Protein With Glutamine!

Sometimes slower is better-especially when it comes to the rate of protein digestion. While rapid protein absorption is desirable immediately before or after exercise, delayed release is probably more beneficial throughout the remainder of the day. Casein proteins are pH sensitive and gel in the acidic environment of the stomach. As a result, it can take more than twice as long for caseins to be broken-down into their amino acid subcomponents than whey and other proteins. Casein is the most abundant protein present in milk. It is considered a high quality protein because it is easily assimilated and it supplies sufficient quantities of amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the body.

Another benefit is increased satiety (feeling of fullness or satisfaction). Casein exerts a slight pressure on the stomach walls. In effect, this pressure signals to the brain to stop eating because the stomach is full. Casein is the most slowly digested and absorbed type of protein. This helps create a "timed-release" effect, providing a steady stream of amino acids to your muscles over a long period of time. The net result is a greatly enhanced anti-catabolic environment which is much more friendly to growth and recovery.

Bodybuilders and athletes looking to build lean muscle, prevent muscle breakdown, and reduce recovery times, and individuals interested in improving the quality of their sleep can greatly benefit from casein.

Casein Research

Perhaps the most interesting kernel on casein to come from the scientific community is the Boirie study, which found that casein managed about a 31% increase in protein synthesis (to whey's 68%)... but also reduced whole-body protein degradation (catabolism) by 34%. More importantly, researchers found that casein contributed to a positive nitrogen balance an average of 7 hours after ingestion.

The Biorie study has since spurred further research of casein. Another study looked at the effect casein might have on body composition when used as part of a 12-week weight-training program. Participants were separated into two groups, each of which maintained a balanced diet including 75 grams of protein per day. The difference was in the sources of protein used: while the first group relied on whey-based drinks to reach their daily protein requirements, the second group made use of milk protein isolates (80% casein, 20% whey). At the end of the study, the milk protein isolate group had lost more fat (15.4 lbs. vs. 9.2 lbs.), gained more lean mass (9 lbs. vs. 4.4 lbs.), and gained more upper and lower body strength than the whey group.

Additional studies, though not as influential, have indicated casein may lower "bad" LDL cholesterol levels and increase "good" HDL cholesterol levels at the same time. In people whose immune systems were weakened by illness or disease, casein appears to demonstrate anti-viral and immune system-enhancing properties. Casein has even been linked to decreases in inflammatory factors in cardiovascular disease.

As you might, or might not know, Casein is the main protein in milk, the other one being Whey. Unlink Whey, Casein digests slowly, which means it takes longer for it to get broken down and absorbed, but it will last longer in the organism. This just means that if you take it overnight, you will have a steady flow of amino acids being absorbed by your body during those 7 or 8 hours of starvation (you are sleeping, but the body is still functioning and recovering).

This product tastes awesome (I have the banana cream) and has 23 grams of protein per serving). I take it everyday right before going to bed.

I got this product due to a friend's recommendation. I work out at least five days a week and take it as a meal replacement during the day or before bed for supplemental protein.

The taste is OK at best. I've tried the double chocolate and the banana cream. Maybe it's the nature of the casein powder, but every time I mix it in a shaker cup, it mixes horribly. It's consistently lumpy and chalky. I'm using the A-1 Supplements cup purchased through the web site with the wire mixing ball, so it's not like I'm just putting it in a normal cup and mixing it incorrectly.

To me, the lumpy consistency is the biggest turn off. I feel the product is effective, but in order to tolerate it, I literally have to mix it pre-workout and let it sit there for a good couple of hours, then shake it again before drinking. If I do this, the lumps generally work themselves out. But who wants to wait two hours to drink the shake? If you want to shake and drink immediately, the product is ALWAYS lumpy and mixes horribly. Perhaps not a factor if you're using a blender or some other form of mixer, but for me, it's a deal breaker.

I've also tried Muscle Infusion Black by Nutrex and have to say it's a far superior product as far as taste and consistency. It's a protein blend, however, so it's not a perfect comparison. I'm not trying to endorse the Nutrex, although I would recommend it, but I'm trying to illustrate that to me, there are better options for meal replacement than the Gold Standard casein powder. I wouldn't recommend this product, and I'm not buying it again.

The Gold Standard Whey is a completely different story. Very tasty and mixes easily. Go figure...

I use this product with my morning meal and for a late night snack. Delicious flavors. I like to mix it and then refrigerate after. Akin to a pudding texture when chilled. WAYYYYYYYYYY healthier than any pudding I've ever tried.

This is a great tasting product (I'm loving the banana cream flavor). I've seen other reviews elsewhere where people complain about how it doesn't mix well or has a bad texture. The more liquid you add the thinner it is, it does mix up thicker than other shakes but it mixes well with a spoon or a mixer.

This stuff is a pain to mix properly. Even with a blender it doesn't fully blend. One scoop protein with 20oz milk and it's still very thick. Tastes like protein did 10 years ago. When I wake up after taking it the night before I feel bloated and gassy. I don't understand all the great reviews. Maybe I received a bad batch...

I use this right after a work out and whenever I need a late night snack and want to avoid the carbs at all costs. On the plus side, these shakes end up pretty thick, so it helps to stave off the hunger. On the minus side, these shakes end up pretty think, so it's kind of hard to get it all mixed in.

Vanilla and Banana Creme are both pretty good tasting. If you're thinking Muscle Milk banana creme then you're going to be a little disappointed; its still a good flavor however. If you mix a shake and then leave it in the fridge for 20 minutes or so it seems to absorb the milk which greatly reduces the chalky consistency that it tends to have if drank right away. A good product and definitely best to drink right before bed. If you want something with casein for the morning or pre-workout then I'd recommend Muscle Milk.
